12 Fashion Laws You Should Never Break

black and white photo of fashionable girl sitting on railing

When it comes to fashion, we believe there are more rules to break than to follow. Fashion is meant to be fun, experimenting with new trends, mixing nontraditional styles, and straying outside the norm is highly encouraged. But with this, we are also seeing a new wave of fashion come onto the scene. One that gets rid of all the rules. It’s true that now more than ever fashion designers are encouraging DIY fashion, mixing and matching wild patterns, pulling inspiration from any era, and pushing people to use fashion for its true purpose – to help us express ourselves and show a little flare of our personalities through what we wear. And the best part is, you don’t have to shop high end brands to achieve the looks you want. Now, there are a few guidelines we like to abide by, not to restrict our style but to help us achieve the look we’re going for, which is why we’ve turned to the experts.

While many of us desire to dress in our true colors, it can still be hard to figure out what exactly that looks like. But thanks to a community of supportive fashion experts, we have the answers you are looking for! Fashion will look different on everyone, which is why we have selected such a diverse list of fashionistas to give us their expert advice. We asked these 12 fashion bloggers about their favorite fashion tips and tricks and they delivered. Ready to give your wardrobe the makeover it needs? Check out the hottest tips and tricks from the industry experts!

1) Careful not to over accessorize

Kaleigh is the Senior Editor for Lux & Concord, a lifestyle and fashion blog that believes in the power of the right outfit. The blog is centered around showing women their power to go after what they want and giving them the tools do to so. Among incredible fashion tips, you can also find interior décor ideas, interviews with inspiring women, travel tips, and more.

But just how exactly does an expert like Kaleigh stay in touch with the latest trends? Kaleigh commented, “Instagram! Cultivate your feed with people you LOVE who have fashion you will actually buy, at a price point you can achieve. I have unfollowed a lot of people recently just because they only wear designer clothes I can’t afford and it ends up making me discouraged to click on their links.”. The wonderful world of Instagram continues to grow and grow and more niche fashion corners are beginning to pop up. If you are unsure of where your personal style might lie, follow Kaleigh’s advice and find people on Instagram who’s style you connect with.

2) Forget about age!

"I don't believe in fashion rules. Rules are meant to be broken. It's more about your style preference, what makes sense for your day-to-day, and what you're comfortable with. I will say though, don't get hung up age -- it's only a number. You can dress fabulous regardless of your age."Ashleigh, writer and founder of The Daileigh writes some of our favorite fashion content on the internet. Known for her uniquely chic style, Ashleigh works to empower other women to do the same and find their voices through what they wear. Everyone should have the opportunity to feel confident in their clothes, and Ashleigh teaches women just how to achieve this. From how to organize your wardrobe to fall basics, Ashleigh’s got you covered head to toe on the latest advice.

We asked Ashleigh what her favorite tip was for people exploring fashion or looking to cultivate a more diverse wardrobe to build off of. She responded, “Invest in your wardrobe basics! They make your fashion life easier, more stylish, and will save you a lot of money in the long run.”. It’s true, no wardrobe is complete without the essential basics that serve more as a foundation to your wardrobe.

3) Choose colors for your natural undertone

"Choose colours that flatter your undertone and patterns that flatter your body type."Divya from Jewels of Sayuri gives us some fresh advice on how to find the right colors for your skin tone. Ever put on a top that you think will look great but the color just looks… off? Divya advices that you look for tones that will compliment your skins natural undertones. But that’s not the only advice she’s got. Divya runs successful blog, Jewels of Sayuri where she serves as the writer, founder, fashion and jewelry designer, and fashion educator. She helps her readers stay ahead of the trends by tuning into the fashion industry all over the world. “As a trend researcher, I like to keep a tab on the socio-cultural, political, economical and technological trends happening in the world for that is where the trends come from. Media scan, runway scan and looking through forecasts such as WGSN and promostly really helps.”.

We asked Divya what she predicts for the rest of 2020 and she responded, “Some jewelery trends for Winter 2021 – pearl jewellery, statement earrings (often mismatched)”. We’re excited to be breaking out our pearls again!

4) Always add a pop of color

"When wearing all black always accessorise with a pop of colour. Whether it be your bag, shoes, trainers. It finishes the look off and make you stand out."Deborah, director for blog Fashion Finest, delivers some of the most readily available up-to-date information happening in the fashion world today. The blog is aimed to help readers stay connected to the latest trends, designers, and runway shows, empowering them with the latest fashion news and teaching them how to incorporate their favorite runway looks into their own wardrobes. One way to achieve this, Deborah advices, is to “Buy staple items that can be worn from season to season, that don’t date and adapted to the ever changing new trends.”. Laying the foundation of your wardrobe with basic essentials can give you a great base to work off of season after season.

When we asked Deborah if she had any favorite advice from her library of expertise, she responded with three tips: “1. Support and buy from small brands, they are the ones that need our help. 2. Don’t wear clothes just because they are on-trend, they need to suit your body shape too. 3. Save money by shopping in charity shops or by reusing or recycling thing you already have in your wardrobe. This will help the environment.”

5) Live by the Rule of Three

"I like the Rule of Three in fashion, the idea that by adding a third piece--whether it's a blazer, scarf or statement jewelry-- you can turn basic clothes into a cohesive "look"."Dianna, Editor in Chief and Founder of The Budget Babe, has been delivering incredible fashion advice to her readers since 2007 (can you say expert?)! Dianna is especially recognizable for her adorable style and helping her readers realize that you don’t have to shop designer to have trendy style. In fact, she even has a portion on her blog where she teaches readers how to copy celebrity outfits for less. “You can recreate the trends you love with budget friendly pieces–it just takes a little more creativity! And after you’ve done a test run with something affordable–like mules or riding boots–and find you really love it, go ahead and invest in something better quality.”

So how does someone like Dianna find her amazing style and adapt to the changing trends? “Instagram! I find out about great sales, new trends and more from following my favorite influencers on IG.”. Dianna herself is on Instagram and constantly posts pictures of her latest outfits and how to achieve her look.

6) Try mixing Texture into your outfits

"When you think you have literally not ONE chic thing to wear, wear black - but mix textures to add a luxe look to the monochromatic vibe."

Karen, founder of fashion blog Glam Karen, comes to us with a fresh perspective on fashion advice. While we’ve always been told black is never out of style, how we accent it continues to evolve and change. Karen suggests mixing in textures to give your outfit a more complete, “monochromatic vibe”, advice we have not heard around the fashion world yet, but one we are definitely trying! But those aren’t the only words of wisdom you’ll receive from Karen. Glam Karen is a blog dedicated to bringing out your personal flare. From DIY facemask chains to dressing up your work from home outfits, Karen brings her readers tools to help them achieve wardrobes that reflect their own personal styles. “Keep it sophisticated & simple. Remember that fashion pieces do not need to “match”, they need to “go” together. Always choose outfits that you’d be confident wearing if you ran into your ‘ex’!”.

How can someone be so fashion forward themselves while lead others to do the same? We asked Karen how she stays in the know and she responded, “Listen to experts in the field (Vogue, InStyle, WWD…) after they attend fashion shows/events. Take their tips/trends but then edit/tweak it to more seamlessly match your own style.”. Great advice if you love runway trends but don’t have the bank account for designer. There is always a way to achieve the looks you want without breaking the bank.

7) No more rules!

"Throw the rule book out the window! Wear what makes you feel good!"

Becky, writer and founder for blog Becky Barnes, gives us our favorite advice yet, no more rules! It’s true that when it comes to fashion, more rules are meant to be broken than followed, and Becky teaches readers just how to be a rule breaker. While Becky delivers fashion advice to all, her audience is primarily based around plus size fashion. It’s in Becky’s corner of the internet that women can find confidence, encouragement, and tips on how to dress the styles they want for their body types. Through her own personal experiences, Becky invites readers into a beautiful reality where you don’t have to look a certain way in order to be exactly who you were meant to be – and Becky helps other women discover this about themselves too.

As an expert in the field, Becky says that Pinterest can be your best friend when planning an outfit. “I love pinterest as a way of planning outfits and getting inspiration. I will often create boards around an item I have – for example: ‘Ways to wear…’ biker jacket, wide leg jeans, dunagrees etc. I reference back to it when I feel uninspired!”. She also suggests turning to social media, which continues to grow with fashion experts of all sizes. “I think social media is the easiest way to access trends nowadays, and with so many bloggers and influencers now, chances are you’ll find someone who is more your size and style than anything in a magazine!”.

For more tips on how to dress your best, check out Becky’s blog, Becky Barnes.

8) Minimalism is key

"we recommend wearing all minimalistic style"

Ferbana is a blog dedicated to the world of fashion. From fashion advice, style tips, runway recaps, upcoming designer collections, and more, Ferbana has you covered on all things fashion. The goal of the blog is to connect readers directly into the fashion world through readily available, up to date information. It’s through Ferbana that readers can find any latest trend, collaboration, new releases, and much more.

When we asked Ferbana how they like to stay ahead of trends, they said “Read a blog magazine and always be yourself, keep it up!”. Fashion is meant to bring out your true colors and personal flare, but as Ferbana suggests, you can only do that when you’re being yourself!

To dive head first into the world of fashion, check out Ferbena.

9) Less is more

"Less is more. I want my outfit combinations to feel natural, like I got out of bed and grabbed the first thing that was within reach, whether it's yesterday's pair of jeans of my husband's tee. To me, style should be effortless, like a second nature."

Chloé, writer and founder of Conscious by Chloé, is a blog dedicated to sustainable living. From zero waste lifestyle habits to ethical fashion, Chloé teaches readers that you can have the latest fashion trends and still take care of the planet while you’re at it. Her style is notorious for being ‘comfortable chic’, dressing in lots of soft linens and cottons, and minimal statement pieces. “I don’t actively follow trends”, says Chloé, “but I would lie if I said that I am not influenced by them. I try to stick to what feels like me and right now, this translates into finding a second-hand pair of Blundstone boots. Living in the high desert has definitely influenced my style and I’m not mad about it!”.

We asked Chloé if she had any final fashion advice for us and she responded, “Shop your closet, shop second hand, borrow from your friends and family, do it yourself.”. As many fashion experts are starting to advice, fashion should be completely, authentically your own. As long as you feel confident in it, whether it was a DIY project, designer purchase, or second hand steal, it will always be on trend.

For more whimsical minimalism, check out Chloé’s blog, Conscious by Chloé.

10) The power of simplicity

"I believe in the power of simplicity – less is always more."

Angela, a fashion influencer from Melbourne, Australia, is founder and writer of blog Sunday Chapter. Sunday Chapter is a lifestyle blog that pulls fashions influences from all over the world and teaches readers how to apply them to their own wardrobes. Anything from an Autumn in Japan look to Everyday Classics, Angela teaches her readers the basics of chic styling and how to achieve the looks you want within your budget. “Invest your money into staples” Angela advices, “don’t over accessorize and focus on developing a signature style and then incorporating trends!”.

How does a fashion influencer like Angela stay in the loop? “Browse fashion blogs and social medias from big fashion labels, magazines & influencers (always look out for repetition), plus staying up to date with fashion shows.”. Keeping up after seasonal runway shows is an excellent way to stay in touch with the latest trends. Taking those influences and incorporating them into your own style is a great way to add a little flare to your closet.

Need to freshen up your wardrobe style? Check out the Sunday Chapter for inspiration!

11) Stick to your style

"Stick to your style, it is always in vogue!"

Shivani Joshi, Head Communications for LA POLO, drops some often overlooked fashion advice on us – always be yourself. Fashion is meant to bring out your confidence and express who you are, but the only way to find the wardrobe pieces to accomplish that is by being 100% yourself, after all, you are always in vogue. But what other advice did Shivani have for us? “Curating a wardrobe of your colour pallete, so that whatever you purchase next, you stick with your library of colours and can have a maximum number of combinations. It is not only easier but even earth-wise and sustainable.”. Great word of advice for any fashion newbies out there! If you are having trouble getting started, choose a color palette to follow and create a library of signature colors. This can be a great start for anyone just starting to explore their fashion sense.

“I personally follow the vintage route and a firm believer of re-inventing and re-wearing.” says Shivani, “Two-pieces over one-pieces so that more options can be created. A lot of brands in the current global climate are following the global conscious path and I believe we should be very particular about what we purchase to reduce carbon footprints.”. While fashion is meant to be a fun form of expression, it is important to be environmentally conscious. As Shivani suggests, there is a way to enjoy fashion while still minimizing carbon footprint. Buying second hand, borrowing from friends, donating your old clothes, can all be practical ways to help our planet while still enjoying the latest trends.

12) Don’t be afraid to experiment!

"Don't be afraid to experiment. Wear what makes you feel confident and like your true self. Developing your personal style will serve you more than following trends. You should feel empowered to express your individuality in what you wear. " - Deena from Nomad ModaDeena, founder and writer for her blog Nomad Moda, is the queen of all things fashion, travel, and beauty. Known for her bold outfits, fun patterns, and overall incredible style, Deena teaches her readers everything they need to know from fashion week updates to DIY fashion projects you can do at home. Her blog is a breath of fresh air when it comes to new wardrobe tips and had a lot of great fashion expertise to pass along to us. “I appreciate well intentioned fashion rules like not mixing black and brown or wearing white after labor day. However, I have a rebellious streak and believe that the rules were meant to be broken.”. As the fashion culture becomes more individualistic, more and more are encouraged to stray away from the norm and break the rules to build a wardrobe completely unique to themselves.

But how does someone like fashion expert Deena keep herself in the know? “I’m interested in the business of fashion. I’m pleased to see the industry incorporate more sustainable practices. I like to read Vogue Business to stay in the know.”. Vogue Business is a great resource to anyone looking to stay connected to the fashion world and catch the highlights of what’s happening. As Deena advises, fashion news sites are a great way to watch the fashion industry develop and move forward toward a more sustainable future.
