Early Life and Career
José Ramón Andrés Puerta, an international author, and Chef is also the receiver of many prestigious awards, including two Michelin stars. He was born in Spain on the 13th of July 1969. From a very tender age, he started accompanying his mother in regular cooking and baking. He was already making complex dishes by then.
By the age of 15, he took classes from a culinary academy named La Escola De Restauració Hostalatge De Barcelona. Later, he enrolled himself in the Spanish military service and served as the Chef for the admiral there. In Barcelona, he also met his role model, whom he still owes his success, Ferran Adria. However, he was also fired by him later in 1990.
After spending his young life in Barcelona, he moved to New York City and worked for Eldorado Petit. By 1993, when he was in his mid-twenties, he joined Rob Wilder and Roberto Alvarez’s Jaleo. His dedication towards the craft and his past experiences made Jaleo one of the commercially successful DC restaurants. He ensured that the restaurant had his touch of Spanish culture and flavors in all of his signature dishes.
Behind this tapas restaurant’s success was his influencing attitude to Carmelo Bocos, for whom he worked in El Cid in New York. His introduction of Spanish dishes amidst the American flavors garnered different taste buds among the inhabitants. The new flavors were well-appreciated by the people, which lasted long for another fifteen years.
Successful Culinary Career
After gaining success in New York, he was handed-over the famous Café Atlantico kitchen back in DC. He then transformed one of the popular hangout joints into a dining activity area. He did not waste much time in expanding his feathers to open up Zaytinya, followed by Oyamel. However, it was the minibar by José Andrés, named Food & Wine, which made him the most popular Chef of all time. He brought the Spanish culture through food and cuisine to American soil.
America’s food and dining culture have then seen a sudden revolution that made him recognized as the “Wonder Boy of Culinary, Washington”. He was also declared as the Chef of the year by the popular food magazine, Bon Appetit. His continuously successful career in gastronomy made him reach the list of Saveur Magazine 100 List. Being a renowned chef, he then ensured to try his culinary art in Mexican dishes and combined its rich diversity. Then came into being the Oyamel Cocina Mexicana in Crystal City, Virginia.
In 2006, he formed the Think Food Group to manage the operations and ensure all his restaurants’ smooth functioning. Presently his net worth is $50 Million. Although all of his restaurants have gained popularity over time, Food and Wine rose him to recognition. His culinary art did not just limit to restaurants but was also published in the form of books.
His first cookbook was named Tapas: A Taste of Spain in America. It was the compact form of all of his signature dishes, reflecting his background and journey throughout. The reflection of heritage through the art of cuisines is evident as the book sold more than 22 lac copies.

José Andrés hosted and produced the TV series Made in Spain. The show featured his journey along with the preparation of some of the authentic Spanish dishes. Later he was awarded many prestigious awards and recognitions from different countries for his contribution to culinary science. His dedication towards the art is visible when people were left amazed. The knife-using skills he displayed while assisting a non-profit organization in preparing community meals were stunning. Chef José Andrés was also Oscar-nominated for his humanitarian work for Bahamas hurricane victims.
