He was always surrounded by people who liked cooking, as his family comprised restaurateurs and grocers specializing in the local barbecue. Rick Bayless took to cooking like a duck in water, and he began experimenting with different cuisines at an early age, eventually settling for Mexican cuisine.

He later widened his interests to include regional Mexican cooking as an undergraduate student of Spanish and Latin American culture. Rick has always put cooking first. He made a move that was then described as daring, as he dropped out of his soon-to-be-completed Ph.D. program studying anthropological linguistics at Michigan to focus more on his budding culinary career.

He started his career as an executive chef at Lopez y Gonzalez in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, where he showed off his cooking expertise to the people of Mexico. Bayless earned a lot of acclaim in this role thanks to his versatility, fame as a cooking show host.

He used the money from his executive chef gig to open a restaurant with his wife in 1987. The restaurant Frontera Grill was located in Chicago and was known for its incorporation of contemporary regional Mexican cuisine and a particular emphasis on the varied cuisines of the Oaxaca region. Frontera Grill was immensely successful, as we all know how the people of Chicago love a well-cooked family meal, and word soon spread of a Mexican cuisine expert resident in the windy city.

A mere two years later, Rick Bayless and his wife opened Topolobampo, a more sophisticated dining restaurant. It has grown from strength to strength ever since, eventually earning a Michelin Star.
