Who is Chef Altamirano?
Carlos Altamirano is a Michelin Star chef, he’s also a mobile truck owner, and his main concern is giving the public what they want in record time. He’s not a flash in the pan, he earned his stripes by getting trained by some of the masters of the industry, such luminaries as Reed Hearon, Bradley Ogden, Bob Helstorm, and Ann Gingrass all had a hand in molding one of the Bay Area’s favorite sons.
He took his time to learn the craft, and in 2004 assisted by his wife, he opened the first Peruvian restaurant in the Bay Area, the restaurant is known Mochica and it became so successful that Carlos Altamirano opened another food spot “Piqueos” in 2007.
Then in 2009, he and his wife opened their biggest and most famous restaurant since, La Costanera, “a contemporary Peruvian restaurant that offered the coastal cuisine of Latin America from a stunning location”. Regarded as one of the finest Latin America-oriented restaurants in the entire country, La Costanera is a standard of excellence, and such excellence was recognized in 2011 when it garnered a Michelin star for its consistency and top-notch service.
Asides from being a restaurant owner, Carlos Altamirano is also a top-notch businessman, and man of the people, as he also has a fleet of Sanguchon street food trucks which are perfect for the hustle and bustle of the Bay Area where he and the majority of his clients reside.
His Signature Restaurants
1) La Costanera
The first thing that captures your attention and when in the La Costanera is certainly the viewpoint, this restaurant is “perfectly set atop one of the most beautiful perches in the entire Bay Area, coupled with it boasting a gorgeous patio and a dining room that’s walled with windows worth swooning over”. This restaurant ticks so many boxes, as most people want to dine in a restaurant that has a proper view, a neat backdrop, and polite customer service to boot.
While the setting is glorious, and the scenery pristine, the number one attraction in La Costanera certainly has to be the food, as there is more than enough to chose from. La Costanera is the pick of the bunch in the Bay Area, thanks to sumptuous dishes like the Cebiche Pescado which when bathed in Leche de Tigre is the best way to get acquainted with the marvels of Latin American cuisine and the beautiful nation of Peru.
Other highlights include the succulent langostino crocantes served over silky potatoes, the herb-marinated pollo Salvaje sided by crispy fries, and a host of other world-class delicacies that have customers trouping in and out regularly. The La Costanera also has a nice wine house, lovely cocktails, nice meals on the side, and delectable appetizers to keep your taste buds dancing in glee.
This restaurant is one of the best around, and it’s no wonder that it’s been a one Michelin Star restaurant since 2011, and seems to be improving every season. The La Costanera has currently closed no thanks to the coronavirus pandemic, but hopefully, it’ll be open when the virus gets nipped in the bud, till them residents might have to do with Carlos Altamirano’s other amazing culinary project.
2) Sanguchon: The Mobile 5 Star Restaurant
The name Sanguchon needs no introduction in the Bay Area, it has been the respite, the go-to food spot, and a breath of fresh air in such a fast-paced city. Of course, it is owned by the great Carlos Altamirano, who is a sucker for the good stuff, and a chef that has incredible taste in the finer things.
Sanguchon opened in 2018 and has been the number one Peruvian mobile restaurant in the region ever since. Carlos Altamirano opened this mobile restaurant because of a growing demand for top-notch Latin American dishes all over the region, and rising demand for food trucks all over the nation.
This proved to be a masterstroke, as the Sanguchon has gotten rave reviews for its class and awesome taste. The Sanguchon has earned five stars in the mobile restaurant rankings, it has garnered critical acclaim in the culinary industry, and multiple trucks have been purchased to match growing demand. It goes to show that anything Carlos Altamirano touches simply turns to gold.
Carlos Altamirano is the perfect example of hard work pays, he’s what you would call self-made, and his unquenchable thirst for leveling up has made him stand out in such a crowded culinary industry. When ranking Peruvian chefs worldwide, there’s no way you won’t have Carlos Altamirano as number one or at the very least top three in the equation, his body of work speaks for himself, and he’s still going strong with ten restaurants and counting. There seems to be nothing this master chef cannot accomplish, and that’s why he has earned the title of the world’s number one mobile 5 Star Restaurant Chef!
